A Laois historian says it will always be important to mark the history of the Famine
A commemoration event is set to be held in Abbeyleix next May, after the HSE has granted permission to the town's heritage society to hold part of it on the grounds of the former workhouse.
The group is also currently holding a petition to bid to host the national Famine commemoration next year.
The event will remember those who lived in the workhouse, and the 28 girls shipped to Australia under the British Government's Earl Grey scheme.
