Fundraising efforts by locals means Ballyroan will get a new playground and sports facility.
A community in Laois has collected €170,000 to match government funding for a new playground and sports amenity.
The bulk of the money was raised through a 'Ballyroan goes to Hollywood' event, featuring local people starring in remakes of popular films.
With a total cost of €560,000, the new facility opens in June, with great excitement from the locals:
Ballyroan’s fundraising efforts not only exceeded their initial target but also brought all ages together, from active retirement to youth groups.
In addition to Ballyroan’s new amenity, several other sports facilities are set to open across Laois in the coming weeks, thanks to funding from Sports Ireland and the Department of Sport.
In Portlaoise, €75,000 has been allocated for various small projects, including the installation of a basketball court and Fit Sticks in Triogue Park.
Furthermore, Riverview Apartments will benefit from a new bowling area, a biodiversity garden complete with seating and planters, and a glasshouse for residents to grow plants and vegetables.
These developments are part of a broader initiative to promote active lifestyles within the community, including active retirement groups who will now have access to new facilities.
Director of Service for Laois County Council Anne Marie Maher, is eager to integrate these groups and enhance their engagement with the community.
“This is a fantastic achievement for Ballyroan and a testament to the incredible community spirit that exists here. The partnership between the local community and the local authority has been instrumental in making this project a reality.”
With the new sports amenity set to open in June, Ballyroan looks forward to welcoming residents and visitors alike to enjoy the new facilities and a range of activities that promote health, wellness, and community connection.
