Lidl Disappointed After Midlands Store Plans Rejected

Planning permission was refused for a new store in Athlone.

Lidl Ireland says it's 'disappointed' over the refusal of planning permission for a new store in the Midlands.

The supermarket chain applied to build a single-storey discount supermarket, a cafe/restaurant and "plaza areas" in Monksland, Athlone.

The site was planned for near the Joe Duffy showroom and across from the Athlone Springs Hotel.

Roscommon County Council refused the application on Friday on the grounds that it was in contravention of the local area plan.

In a statement to Midlands 103, Lidl says they remain "committed to releasing a new store in the Monksland and wider Athlone area."

The retailer is being given a month to appeal the decision.

"We are disappointed to receive Roscommon County Council's decision but remain committed to releasing a new store in the Monksland and wider Athlone area, bringing Lidl's market-leading quality and value to shoppers in the community as soon as possible.
