A public consultation meeting is taking place in Portlaoise today.
Creating a low carbon, walkable centre is key for the development of a Laois town.
That's among the priorities of the Draft Portlaoise Local Area Plan.
Laois County Council is seeking the public's views on the future of Portlaoise.
It wants to reuse existing town centre buildings for new purposes, such as housing, and encourage people to live above shop premises where possible.
The local authority is prioritising a number of actions, including the consolidation and regeneration of the town centre, active travel, and reducing car dependency.
Another aim is to entice people to the town centre, by promoting a range of day and night activities, and through the creation of secure pedestrian and cycling links.
Portlaoise has seen a rise in population of almost 100% in over 20 years, with just under 23,500 living in the town as of 2022.
A public information session will be held in Portlaoise Library today from 11am to 1pm.
Submissions will be accepted until the 26th of June.
