Local Councillors Looking To Regain Barracks In Westmeath

Columb Barracks has been used to accommodate international protection applicants in recent years.

Councillors in Westmeath are looking to regain control over Columb Barracks.

Fine Gael rep Andrew Duncan says the move comes years after the council decided against taking responsibility for the building before the State took over through the Land Development Agency.

Since closing down in 2012, the building played host to a number of community groups while in recent years the grounds have been used to accommodate international protection applicants.
