She's waived her right to anonymity so she could inspire others who have been abused by family members.
A 30-year-old man has been jailed for three years for abusing his younger sister at the family home in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath when they were children.
On various dates between December 2007 and May 2009, Cian Farrelly raped and sexually assaulted his sister, Aoife, in the family home in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath.
She was just 7-years-old when the abuse began. He was 15yo.
The abuse ended when she told their parents what was going on, but aside from confronting him, the judge noted that her complaint wasn’t adequately dealt with.
Despite that, Aoife said she didn’t blame her parents for what happened but hated that they didn’t understand the seriousness of what he had done.
She described how she felt “trapped” in the family home with him during the pandemic and told the judge he had torn her whole world apart.
In sentencing him to three years in prison, the judge said he had to have regard for the fact that he too was a child at the time of the abuse.
