It occurred in Portlaoise in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A man in his 40s remains in a serious but stable condition following an attack in Laois.
He was assaulted on Main Street, Portlaoise at about 3 o'clock in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise but later transferred to St. James’ Hospital, Dublin.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, especially anyone who was near the junction of Main Street and Church Street, to come forward.
They're also asking the public not to share video footage of the incident and its aftermath online.
