He appeared before Athlone District Court this morning.
A man has been remanded in custody, charged with the assault of an elderly woman in a Westmeath care home.
54-year-old Peter Keaney, of 7 Hillside Close, Monksland, Athlone, Roscommon, appeared before a sitting of Athlone District Court and Judge Bernadette Owens this morning.
Mr. Keaney is charged with section 3 assault causing harm to a woman in her 80s after allegedly entering the residential home on Monday night.
He was remanded in custody for one week and will reappear at Athlone District Court on May 8, when a bail application is expected to be made.
Gardaí have indicated there will be an objection to bail.
Judge Owens also directed psychiatric assessment and a report.
