Midlands Bee Keepers Oppose Ever Increasing Bee Importation

A number of different bee species have been brought to Ireland in the last two decades.

People are being reminded that bees are a long term commitment, and not just for Christmas.

The importation of bees into Ireland can mean the spread of diseases that native Irish bees may not be able to handle.

There is also the risk that imported bees could be of a more aggressive nature, or be unable to cope with the colder weather and die out. 

The Chairperson of the Offaly Bee Keepers Association, Geraldine Byrne, says the decision to get bees should not be taken lightly:
