Champion Of Loyalty - Midlands Business Man Laid To Rest Today

The former Midlands 103 board member made a crucial contribution to the region's hospitality offering.

Popular and successful midlands business man Christy Maye will be laid to rest today.

The Ballymahon man was responsible for some of the region's best known hotels like The Greville Arms in Westmeath and The Bridge House in Offaly.

Mr Maye was one of the founders of the Tullamore Show, and played a pivotal role in the birth of the Irish disco scene in the 1960s with his brainchild, 'Disc A Go Go'.

He was also a board member at Midlands 103.

His funeral mass takes place today at 12 o'clock in the Church of the Immaculate Conception Forgney with a burial taking place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

He's being remembered today as an "entertainer" and as a man who championed loyalty above all else.

Johnny Butterfield worked with him on the nationally renowned agri-show for many years.

He says Christy knew what was most important in business and in life:

Jim Bourke, from Mullingar Auto's Volkswagen is another old friend of Mr Maye's and he says he was as generous as he was ambitious:

Mourners have lined the streets of Mullingar to say a final farewell to Christy.

His funeral cortege passed by his beloved Greville Arms Hotel this morning.

A family photo, a LP and a Tullamore Lions Club jumper were among the gifts brought to the alter to represent his love of family, his role in the birth of the Irish disco scene and  his involvement in charity and voluntary work.
