Community Alert marks its 40th anniversary this year with efforts to modernise the scheme through their official app 'Cairde'.
People can gather contacts through the app and report instantly if they feel something unsafe is happening in their area.
Portlaoise's Rosie Palmer is the CEO of Muntir Na Tire and says smaller areas such as Woodenbridge in Ballacolla have used the scheme to reduce burglaries in their area.
She says they're also making efforts to kickstart dormant groups:
