Gardaí are investigating the incident, which occurred at a home on Main Street in Kilbeggan in the early hours of yesterday morning, shortly after 1am.
A man in his 80s was treated at Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore but has since been discharged - a sum of cash was also taken from his home.
Gardaí say a technical examination of the scene has already been carried out.
They're appealing for witnesses to the incident, particularly anyone who was in the Main Street area between midnight and 3am yesterday morning and may have seen anything, to come forward.
