Prison officers are warning overcrowding is causing a potentially explosive situation within the country's jails.
The annual conference of the Prison Officers Association will hear today that the number of people in custody is continuing to rise, with more than 350 people sleeping on jail floors yesterday.
As of yesterday, Portlaoise Prison is currently operating at 122% over capacity, while the Midlands Prison is at 113% of its capacity.
The POA says there are around 15-hundred more prisoners than in 2019, and has warned if an immediate solution isn't found there will be a tragic event or some form of crisis.
