Midlands Vaccine Centre Reopening For 'Walk-Ins' Today

Anyone over the age of 16 can attend.

A vaccination clinic will re-open on a walk-in basis in the midlands this afternoon.

The facility at the Athlone Mass Vaccination Centre in AIT will be offering first doses of the Pfizer jab. 

Those over the age of 16 can attend between 1 and 7pm.

An immunologist says Ireland is not "behind the curve" when it comes to rolling out the mixing of vaccines.

Following months of deliberations, NIAC yesterday recommended the practice in limited circumstances.

The HSE's now working to operationalise the advise.

Professor Christine Loscher says many other countries are only now looking at implementing the practice:

The Chief Medical Officer says the incidence of Covid-19 is rising steadily in all age groups and in 21 of 26 counties.

The 14-day incidence rate is 493 cases per 100,000 people, the highest it has been since January.

1,496 new cases were reported here yesterday, while 230 were in hospital last night, and 54 in intensive care.

That includes 18 in midlands hospitals, one of whom is in ICU in Mullingar.
