The swim is to raise money for local charity St. Vincent De Paul.
A Laois woman is undertaking two major swimming challenges in aid of charity.
Mountmellick's Joan Fennelly is challenging herself to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco Bay next month, followed by a 3 mile loop around Liberty Island off the coast of New York only four days later.
She's hoping to raise 5 thousand euro for Mountmellick's Conference of Saint Vincent de Paul, so far having gathered over 1 thousand 300.
Ms. Fennelly says her local SVP was an obvious choice in honour of her late mother, who previously served as a member of the charity:
