More Than €38,000 Spent On Providing TVs In Two Local Prisons

The Irish Prison Service says the help reduce incidences of self-harm.

Over €38,500 was spent providing in-cell TVs and premium channels in the Midlands and Portlaoise jails last year.

235 TV sets are in place in the facilities at the most recent count. 

The Irish Daily Star reports multi-channel services, including Netflix is provided at a cost of €74,000, for the entire prison service.

The IPS say incidents of self-harm and suicide in jails have dramatically reduced since televisions were brought in a number of years ago.
