Most homes across the midlands hold a C in their Building Energy Rating, according to the Central Statistics Office.
In Laois, 13% of homes have a rating of C2, followed by 12% in Westmeath and 11% in Offaly.
CSO figures show Laois also has the highest percentage of dwellings with an A rating, at 15%, while Offaly and Westmeath are at 12% and 10% respectively.
A home in the region has an average age of 32.6 years.
Nationally, 15% of homes achieved an A rating, with an overall average age of 34.
Over 30% of non domestic buildings in the midlands have achieved the lowest possible energy rating.
A G grade is recorded on 13% of Laois buildings and 10% in both Offaly and Westmeath, according to the Central Statistics Office.
Only 11% of premises achieved the most energy efficient rating of A in the region.
Nationally, the highest rated non domestic buildings were found to be in Schools and Colleges, while Workshops and Maintenance Depots had the highest proportion of G ratings.
