Nearly 600 Patients Waiting On Trolleys Today

A record-breaking 130 people are on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick.

A record-breaking 130 patients are on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick.

The INMO says its members are "burnt out and demoralised."

563 people are on trolleys across the country this Monday afternoon, and 130 of them are at University Hospital Limerick.

The record-breaking figure of patients on trolleys at UHL is well ahead of the 45 at Cork University Hospital today, and the 44 at Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin.

There are 14 patients waiting for a bed in the midlands, with eight waiting in Portlaoise and six in Mullingar. 

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says "the fact that there are more patients on trolleys across the hospital than in the emergency department is making the provision of safe and timely care impossible."

It adds its members are "burnt out and demoralised as a direct result of their working conditions" and it's "impossible for them to provide safe care in a working environment that is persistently dangerous."

The INMO has called on the HSE to outline what targeted interventions they intend to carry out to take the pressure off its members for the sake of patient safety.
