A Midlands councillor is questioning the necessity of a Westmeath Road project.
The Railway Field Road project in Athlone has been ongoing for over 20 years due to delays and planning setbacks.
Fianna Fail rep Frankie Keena believes there is no alternative loop for the new town centre road between the Crescent junction and St Vincent's Care Centre to be located on.
A pre-planning meeting has been requested with the planning section, which is required before going to An Bord Pleanála in the coming weeks.
The planning application is scheduled for submission in the third quarter of this year.
Councillor Keena says there needs to be progress with the unbuilt development:
