New Report Finds Death Of Man In Midlands Prison ''Unconscionable'

A report into the death of 'Mr.D' has been published by the Office of the Inspector of Prisons.

The death of a inmate in a cell in a Laois Prison is being described as 'unconscionable', 

An investigation report into the circumstances of the man's death in Midlands Prison have been published by the Office of the Inspector of Prisons.

The man, named as 'Mr.D'  passed away on August 2nd 2021.

The 59 year old had been committed on October 18th 2018, to serve a five-year sentence and was due to be released in February 2022.

He was in a single cell, and he had a inherited blood clotting disorder, deep vein thrombosis and lymphedema.

On the day of the incident, he'd written a note saying 'I had a reaction to antibiotics.' with his tongue appearing to be swollen.

A nurse, who could see his tongue appearing to be swollen had to watch helplessly through the locked door, as it took prison officers 14 minutes to locate the key to his cell.

In response to recommendations, Midlands Prison say procedures for ready access to keys have been reviewed and updated.
