New Rules For Convicted Sex Offenders Over A Decade In The Making

The new law could see some offenders monitored with an electronic tag.

New rules to tighten the monitoring of convicted sex offenders in the community have been over a decade in the making, according to an independent TD.

The Sex Offenders (Amendment) Act is aimed at protecting victims and potential victims when offenders are released back into the community.

Among the measures, the length of time offenders have to register with local Gardaí after being released from prison is being reduced from a week to three days.

If deemed necessary, some offenders will also be monitored with electronic tags or have their personal details released to the public.

Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten - who proposed a law to reform the area in 2012 - says this new act needs to be implemented as soon as possible:

The new law - which could see some sex offenders monitored with electronic tags - is being welcomed by Ireland's leading rape crisis centre.

But Noeline Blackwell, CEO of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, says the law will only be effective if there are resources to back it up:
