New rules to tighten the monitoring of convicted sex offenders in the community have been over a decade in the making, according to an independent TD.
The Sex Offenders (Amendment) Act is aimed at protecting victims and potential victims when offenders are released back into the community.
Among the measures, the length of time offenders have to register with local Gardaí after being released from prison is being reduced from a week to three days.
If deemed necessary, some offenders will also be monitored with electronic tags or have their personal details released to the public.
Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten - who proposed a law to reform the area in 2012 - says this new act needs to be implemented as soon as possible:
