The warning system has been installed in a bid to reduce "near misses" at level crossings.
A new warning detection system is being installed at a Westmeath level crossing.
The system operates as a traffic light when a train is approaching by providing real time warnings.
It's located near Culleen More and Lough Owel to reduce the risk of accidents.
Currently, there's 64 user operated level crossings nationally and 10 more planned across the network this year.
At locations where this system has been installed reports of "near misses" between trains and people have decreased.
Iarnród Éireann' s Director of Health & Safety, Kay Doyle says: "Operating a safe railway is our number one priority. Where we have interface between the railway and road users, there is always risk. This advanced warning detection system helps to reduce this risk and makes crossing the railway safer for everyone"
