It would have a capacity of 1,000 students.
Plans are being submitted for a new secondary school in the midlands.
The Laois Offaly Education Training Board is seeking permission for a new building for Dunamaise College in Portlaoise.
The new facility, if given the green light, will be able to accommodate 1,000 pupils.
The current schools is currently operating on two different sites in Summerhill with 550 students.
Laois Offaly Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley is welcoming the news and says "there are huge demands for Secondary School places in Portlaoise. and the new development at Summerhill will help to address this and I will be urging LCC to expedite the planning process for it in a timely manner.’’
