The motion on the Midlands Hospice project received support from all councillors, bar one,
County Offaly is set to benefit from the latest Midlands health project.
At the most recent Offaly County Council meeting, councillors voted to support a motion for a hospice care facility to be built in the county.
Tullamore has been chosen to house the proposed 20-bed hospice care facility.
The motion received support from all councillors, bar one, with Councillor Fergus McDonnell objecting to the proposal due to concerns about the chosen site.
The project will now move forward, with the facility set to be built on Offaly County Council land.
The initiative will be developed in partnership with the HSE and Laois, Offaly and Westmeath County Councils.
The facility will provide hospice care for people across the Midlands, allowing patients and their families to access these services closer to home.
Councillor Noel Cribbin highlighted that the closest hospice care facility currently available is in the Curragh, County Kildare.
Cllr Cribbin says he is fully supportive of the initiative and welcomes the plans to bring this service to the region:
He also acknowledged that County Offaly is fortunate to have been chosen to house the facility, which will provide much-needed hospice care closer to families with loved ones who require the service.
The development marks an important step towards improving access to hospice care across the Midlands.
