An Offaly councillor says opening extra hospital beds in Tullamore is only scratching surface.
Independent Seán O'Brien is welcoming the announcement of eight new beds at the Midlands Regional Hospital in the coming weeks, to alleviate pressure on the Emergency Department.
But he says a lot more reform is needed - with over 66,500 people on waiting lists for day procedures alone.
Councillor O'Brien feels there are a number of issues that urgently need to be dealt with, including a shortage of nurses and removing private patients from public hospitals:
