Papal Conclave Elects Pope Leo XIV

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is the new Pope.

Cardinal Robert Prevost has been chosen as the first American Pope in history.

He's taken the papal name Leo the 14th.

White smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel earlier, signifying a replacement to Pope Francis had been chosen.

Voting in the secretive conclave only began yesterday.

Crowds cheered as Pope Leo appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica:

Bishop Michael Duignan of the Diocese of Clonfert says his experience with many different church contexts and his missionary zeal will "stand him in good stead".

Fr Iggy O' Donovan studied with the new Pope in Rome.

He says Pope Leo will likely continue the teachings of his predecessor:

Tánaiste Simon Harris has congratulated Cardinal Prevost on his elections as the next leader of the catholic church.

He said It's a momentous occasion for Pope Leo XIV and for the millions of Catholics across the world who now look to him for guidance, leadership, and inspiration.

Simon Harris said he sends him his very best wishes as he prepares to undertake this responsibility.

The Taoiseach has added his congratulations to the new pontiff.

Michael Martin said he hopes that this ground swell of best wishes towards Pope Leo XIV will give him strength and support as he takes on the immense responsibility of his pontificate.

He added he knows that he has the best wishes of all Irish people, of all traditions.

Donald Trump has posted on Truth Social to congratulate the new pope.

He says it's such an honour to realise that he is the first American Pope, and he looks forward to meeting Pope Leo 14th.
