Minister Helen McEntee says she is working to increase capacity
The Justice Minister says the government has plans in place to provide additional space in Irish prisons.
The number of prisoners in Ireland surpassed 5 thousand for the first time last week – this is 11 per cent above capacity in the country’s 14 prisons.
The State has plans in place to provide additional accommodation to four of the country's institutions, including the Midlands Prison, between 2026 and 2030.
