Protest At Barracks Not Representative Of Midlands Town

A bus, of asylum seekers, was stopped from entering the former Westmeath barracks.

The Mayor of Mullingar doesn't believe the protest outside Columb Barracks represents the people of the town. 

Hazel Smyth is making the comments after a bus, carrying asylum seekers, was stopped from entering the former army barracks, after around 30 people gathered outside the gates on Friday. 

Up to 120 single male refugees are due to housed in tented accommodation on the site for 16 weeks. 

The Green Party Councillor says it's appalling that people fleeing terriible circumstances were welcomed to the area in that manner:
