The population of Irish prisons is also an ageing one.
The number of inmates in Irish Prisons has risen above 4,000 for the first time in 5 years.
As of July of this year - Irish prisons are home to 4,061 inmates.
This represents an 11% increase in the last 18 months and a jump of almost 2,000 in the last 25 years.
There are currently 819 housed in the Midlands Prison, while 229 detained in the maximum-security Portlaoise Prison.
The number of female inmates is also on the rise.
179 women are serving sentences at the moment, a jump of over one fifth in the last two years.
Prision officers are also deaing with an aging prison population.
The number of inmates over 50 years of age has more than doubled in the last 10 years.
