Housing charity Threshold says rents are rising faster than increases in people's incomes, meaning the lives and aspirations of tenants are being put on hold.
The average cost of rent in the midlands is just over €900, according to figures published by the Residential Tenancies Board.
Laois is the most expensive option, with an average figure of €951, while the rate in Westmeath and Offaly is €914 and €878, respectively.
John Mark McCafferty of Threshold says he's hopeful the recent review of the private rental market will lead to the formulation of a plan to protect renters:
