Rise In Alcohol And Drug Related E-Scooter Crashes Recorded

30% of people injured in e-scooter crashes are presenting to hospitals intoxicated in new research from St James's Hospital. 

A Midlands doctor is voicing concerns over the presence of alcohol and drugs in e-scooters users. 

It comes as over 30% of people injured in e-scooter crashes are presenting to hospitals intoxicated.  

New research by St James' Hospital in Dublin also shows the use of helmets by patients with facial injuries has dropped from 23% to 18%. 

The law requires users to be over 16 years and to adhere to a maximum speed limit of 20 km/h, however the use of helmets is not mandatory. 

 Prof. Eoin Sheehan of Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore says scooters will never come out well from a collision with a vehicle:
