The collision between a car and the man occurred on the Tullamore Road just outside Clara at 7.45 yesterday evening.
The road remains closed, diversions are in place, and the scene is currently being preserved for the forensic collision examiner.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
Any road users who may have camera or dash-cam footage and were travelling on the R420 between Tullamore and Clara, between 7:30pm and 8pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
