Scorching Temperatures Hit The Midlands

A new high of a 30.5 degrees record was broken yesterday.

We're in for another day of scorching temperatures. 

A new record was set yesterday for the month of May when a new high of 30.5 degrees was broken at Shannon Airport. 

Met Eireann say maximum highs in excess of 27 degrees can be expected again today, with Status Yellow alerts for high temperatures in place in Laois and Offaly and six other counties Kilkenny, Tipperary, Galway, Clare, Kerry, and Limerick until 6pm this evening. 

Andrew Doran Sherlock from Met Eireann says we could also be facing some very severe thunderstorms: 

A Status Orange thunderstorm warning's been issued for Cork.

It's in effect until 4pm, while four other counties, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford, are under a yellow alert until 7pm.
 
Separately, eight counties in the midlands, west and south are under a Status Yellow high temperature warning until 6pm.
 
Met Eireann is forecasting highs of 31 degrees.
 
Senior Climatologist at Met Éireann, Dr Pádraig Flattery says climate change is resulting in more extreme weather conditions: 

People are being warned prolonged exposure to UV rays can damage the eyes and increase the risk of conditions including cataracts and macular degeneration.
