The Irish Cancer Society is appealing for people to consider the role.

There is a shortage of night nurses, in particular for end-of-life care in Westmeath.

The Irish Cancer Society night nurses provided over 800 nights of care to over 200 families across the midlands last year.

The service helps to enable families care for loved ones at home in their final days and weeks. They are there to give medication and be a support to the patient and their families at night following assistance from the community palliative care team during the day.

Caroline Webb, night nurse with the Irish Cancer Society, has been speaking to Will Faulkner on Midlands Today on how tough but rewarding the job can be:

The Society is recruiting for more night nurses. The role may be suitable for people with nursing experience who are able to commit to six to eight nights of care per month. Anyone interested can apply at recruitment@irishcancer.ie and details are also available on the careers section of the Society's website at cancer.ie

Anyone who would like to enquire about night nursing assistance can contact the Irish Cancer Society Freephone Support Line on 1800 200 700.
