Brian Stanley has been highlighting the situation at the Laois hospital with the new HSE CEO.
It's a scandal that twelve beds at Abbeyleix Hospital are not available for step down care.
Sinn Fein's Brian Stanley also believes there is an urgent need for these beds to free up desperately needed space in Portlaoise and Tullamore Hospitals.
There are currently only 10 beds being used for respite care.

Meanwhile, the new head of the HSE says improving the culture of the health sector is one of his top priorities during his tenure as CEO.
In the past five years, there were 171 complaints of bullying made by staff to the HSE, while figures from the Irish Medical Organisation show it's a much more widespread issue.
CEO Bernard Gloster described bullying in the health sector as abhorrent and unacceptable.
He plans to clamp down on it:
