Up to 55 refugees will be moved into the site.
Ukrainian refugees destined for a site in Offaly are likely to be relocated from accommodation where a contract has ended, according to the State.
As many as 55 people fleeing the war in Ukraine are due to be moved into the old shoe factory in Edenderry, with the premises expected to be available to the Department of Integration by the end of the month.
It says as a result of a reduction in the number of people arriving from Ukraine, it's likely those set to be housed at the site will be brought in from other accommodation where a contract has ended.
The old shoe factory was subject to vandalism when the plans were first revealed in October of last year.
In a statement to Midlands 103, the Department of Integration says the property required refurbishment works before it could be used as temporary accommodation:
"This property progressed under the Department of Housing’s Emergency Refurbishment Programme. The ERUP programme provides the structures to enable the required assessments for refurbishment/repurposing works to take place, to provide assurances that the property being offered is being prepared to the required standard and complies with building, fire and other statutory requirements.
Due to a reduction in the number of people arriving from Ukraine, as well as an increase in those exiting State accommodation, the State is reducing its overall accommodation stock. As a result, it is likely that those who are accommodated at St Marys, will be reaccommodated from accommodation where a contract has ended and, where possible, people will be accommodated in the same area."
