Doubts are emerging about the likelihood of a first count happening today.
The counting of votes for the Midlands Northwest constituency is continuing this afternoon. And there is talk there may not be a first count until tomorrow.
It’s hoped that there could be a first count in the Midlands Northwest constituency tonight, however there is talk that may not now happen until sometime tomorrow.
There’s 320 counters here in the TF Royal in Castlebar, a record number of count staff at any count centre for any Irish election. But that hasn’t made things run any quicker. And it’s likely that Midlands Northwest will be the last constituency in the EU to get a final result.
Luke Ming Flanagan, who is likely to retain his seat in Brussels, says he’s expecting the count to go on until the end of the week.
As well as Mr. Flanagan looking likely to take one of the five seats, Maria Walsh, Offaly's Barry Cowen and Ciarán Mullooly are all understood to have polled well.
But there could be a battle for the fifth and final seat here.
The final result will probably happen towards the end of the week, and it’ll be no laughing matter if the count runs until Friday, because comedian Jarlath Regan is due to take the stage for a sold out gig in the TF Royal on Friday night.
