Traffic pinch points have emerged in the town centre since the introduction of a new smart traffic light system in 2020, with the junction at McDonald's a particular cause for concern.
The long-standing issue came up for discussion at the latest meeting of Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District this week.
Fianna Fáil rep Ken Glynn had asked if the MD would bring forward proposals to help alleviate traffic flow in the town centre.
Westmeath County Council informed councillors that it has commissioned a new study to examine the issue.
