Westmeath councillor Tom Farrell is making the suggestion as a way to cut costs for commuters and reduce the number of cars on the roads.
He's proposing lower fares on peak services between Athlone and Dublin and the introduction of the Leap Card, with local councillors now writing to Minister Eamon Ryan and the National Transport Authority to pursue the matter.
