The plans were announced at Failte Ireland's Hidden Heartlands briefing.
A new walking and cycle trail network between Westmeath and Offaly is being planned.
It's part of a collaboration between Failte Ireland and Bord na Mona.
The proposed trail would run between Athlone and Lough Boora on former industrial peatlands.
A second possible trail route has also been identified in Offaly which would link the Grand Canal Walkway and Mount Lucas Windfarm.
Athlone also looks set to get a new waterside amenity under the Shannon Tourism Masterplan.
All plans were announced at Failte Ireland's Hidden Heartlands briefing.
12 projects have been funded so far from the private and community sectors, totaling €1.6m.
While €25m awarded to 23 projects across the territory through a Strategic Partnership with the eight Local Authorities, the Office of Public Works, Bord na Móna, Coillte and Waterways Ireland.
