That's the warning from Pat Hunt, Acting Chief Fire Officer for Westmeath as Fire Safety Week kicks off today.
It aims to encourage homeowners to take practical steps to reduce the risk of a blaze, such as installing proper smoke alarms and regular chimney checks.
