Westmeath County Council Approves €86.2m Of Spending In 2021

That's an increase of almost €2m on this year.

Westmeath County Council has passed the 2021 Budget which sees a total of 86.2 million being spent, an increase of 1.9 million euro compared to last year.

The main aim of the budget is to support sectors who have been badly impacted by the pandemic.

A total of over 975,000 euro in supports is to be allocated to four leisure and recreational centres they include Belvedere House and Garden, Mullingar Swimming Pool, Athlone Regional Sports Centre and Athlone Arts and Tourism. 

In housing, an increase of 31,000 euro is being given for day to day maintenance on homes with a further 151,000 euro is being given to planned maintenance.

There will be an extra boost of 100,000 euro for road maintenance.

The council is to receive 8.2 million from the rates waiver scheme by the government after it was introduced to support local businesses.

A new allocation of 80,000 euro is to be used for local economic sustainability initiatives, this will allow the council to take further action in supporting business activity.

While 146,000 is provided for the Westmeath Tourism Office to implement the tourism strategy for the county.

It was made clear from the outset that the decision of the county councillors to increase the local property tax in September had played a key role in maintaining full services for the county.
