There are plans in Westmeath to develop a €2,000 pilot scheme for a community orchard.
Green Party Councillor Louise Heavin is behind the idea and hopes that if the initial stages are successful, it could be rolled out at more locations in the county.
The first phase will consist of 10-15 trees managed by a number of volunteers.
