Aidan Ward pleaded guilty to assault.
A Westmeath man has been jailed for three months for assaulting a garda and calling him a Nazi, according to the Irish Independent.
41 year old Aidan Ward of Clonmore Heights in Mullingar, pleaded guilty to assault, threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and failure to comply with directions from a Garda.
The Court heard that on November 17th last year, Mr Ward called an on-duty offficer a "Nazi" and a "Black and Tan" after being asked to leave the area of Abbey Street Upper.
He was then arrested and proceeded to spit in the garda's face, an account Mr Ward denied strenuously in court.
He said the officer was a liar.
The Mullingar man also insinuated he was beaten in his cell afterwards and insisted through his barrister he never entered a guilty plea.
Paul Larkin Cole added that his client had mental health issues.
Judge John Hughes refused to allow for a plea change and, noting the mental health difficulties, sentenced Ward to five months in prison with the final two months suspended on condition he sought counselling and took an anger management course.
