Westmeath Retail Worker Sentenced To Eight Months For Violent Assault

33 year old James McCann of the Dublin Road, Moate is pleading guilty to three counts of assault, criminal damage and two charges of public disorder.

A Westmeath retail worker has been sentenced for eight months for a violent attack in a Midlands town, according to the Irish Independent.

33 year old James McCann of the Dublin Road, in Moate is pleading guilty to three counts of assault, criminal damage and two charges of public disorder.

Athlone District Court heard the accused punched a taxi driver in face, grabbed a bar worker by the throat, and smashed an entire counter top of drinks at Gertie Browne's in Athlone on November 1st last year.

Gardaí say their Athlone station received several calls about an topless man harassing customers and taking their drinks in the bar.

His defence said he was profoundly sorry and had on-going battles with alcohol and drugs.

He was attending AA meetings at the time, but had dramatically relapsed on the night in question.

Mr McCann, who is already serving a sentence for an unrelated Circuit Court matter, has 16 previous convictions to his name including a past assault.

Judge Vincent Deane said the previous assault added a more aggrevating element to the seriousness of the actions on the night in question.

His eight month sentence for assault causing harm will run consecutively to the sentence he picked up in March.
