Disappointing Opening Round For Lowry In New York

He had birdied his first two holes before falling back.

Shane Lowry made a disappointing start to the US Open in New York.

The Open Champion began with back to back birdies but ended up dropping a further 8 shots to finish 6 over par.

That’s the same score Graeme McDowell will begin his second round from.

While Amateur champion James Sugrue is 8-over.

Rory McIlroy was the only Irish golfer to have an enjoyable opening round at Winged Foot.

He shot a 3-under round of 67.

McIlroy says he felt good coming into the tournament:

American Justin Thomas leads by one on 5 under par.
