It's the first time since 2008 the showpiece will take place in Russia.

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan says the host city for UEFA Champions League Final should be switched in response to the Ukrainian crisis.

It's due to take place in St. Petersburg in May, but the Laois-Offaly TD thinks authorities should move it to another European capital.

The last final to take place in Russia was a 1-all draw between Manchester United and Chelsea in Moscow 14 years ago.

The chair of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs committee says UEFA needs to act now:

It's something that's a low hanging fruit. I believe that should be switched to another European capital and to be honest, it's easily one at this stage before advanced planning takes place.

It a statement this afternoon, UEFA has said the following:

There are no current plans to move this season's Champions League final from St Petersburg - despite tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

European football's most prestigious match is due to take place at the Gazprom Arena in late May.

The competition's governing body says it's "constantly and closely monitoring the situation".
