Greyhound Racing Ireland Expands Supports For Injured Dogs

It'll cover 75% of vet costs up to €1000.

Greyhound Racing Ireland has announced a significant expansion of existing supports for seriously injured greyhounds.

The Injury at Tracks Scheme will provide financial support to greyhounds that suffer a career ending injury during unofficial or official trials and during racing at GRI-licenced venues.

The scheme replaces the Track Injury Support Scheme, which previously provided supports to greyhounds injured during race meetings only. Assistance funding from the expanded scheme will be set at 75% of the veterinary cost, up to a maximum of €1000 for hock or long bone injuries, per greyhound.

In a further change to the previous scheme, owners wishing to avail of supports are no longer prevented from breeding thereafter. However, it remains a cornerstone of the scheme that greyhounds are no longer eligible to race, if availing of scheme supports.

Dearbhla O’Brien, CEO of GRI has welcomed the expansion of the scheme, which she said formed part of RCÉ’s ongoing care and welfare programme.

Ms. O’Brien commented,

“GRI is committed to encouraging responsible greyhound ownership and spreading the message amongst industry patrons that all racing greyhounds shall be treated with care and that after racing each enjoys a happy retirement. A career–ending injury is not necessarily life-ending and a long and happy retirement is everyone’s goal.”

William Fitzgerald, GRI Veterinary Director said,

“This updated and improved scheme will enable treated greyhounds to enjoy an active life in retirement within a family setting. I would urge owners and trainers to familiarise themselves with the full details of the scheme on our website, www.grireland.ie.”
