'It Was Nip And Tuck To The End' - St. Lomans Manager Reacts To Quarter-Final Success

They were five-point victors over Caulry.

St. Lomans bid for back to back county titles in Westmeath remains on course.

They came out the right side of a very physical encounter with Caulry in the Westmeath SFC quarter-finals at the weekend.

They'll take on Coralstown-Kinnegad in the final four.

It what has become a pattern for the Mullingar side in the 2021 championship they were slow starters and trailed at the half, mostly down to some very tenacious tackling and intense defending in general from their South Westmeath opponents.

Manager Shane Curran will be happy with the performances of his younger charges during this campaign and having reached their stated aim of making the last eight, this was a shot to nothing for them overall.

Speaking after securing their 1-10 to 0-8 point win, St.Lomans boss Declan Kelly said:

'The game was very tight. The goal at the end put a bit of gloss on the score-line but at the end of the day it's a one point win realistically. It was nip and tuck the whole way through.

You wouldn't be surprised at the performance Caulry put up with the people that are over them. Having looked at them in their previous draw with Moate, they're very organised, keep possession and move the ball through the hands well as well as getting back in numbers.'

They had a couple of chances where by their own standards they could have been further ahead at half-time, we missed a few in the second half and it was just one of those games that was going to have a point in it at the end of the day and thankfully we came out on the right side of it.'

It has been a case of playing in patches throughout the season for the defending champions and they'll know a much better performance will be needed when they take the field for the semi-final in a few weeks time.
