New York official upsets the odds to defeat hot favourite Burns
Larry McCarthy representing New York pulled off a surprise victory in the GAA Presidential Election last night beating the hot favourite Jarlath Burns of Armagh to the post.
The vote was held at the annual congress at Croke Park.
There were five candidates Jim Bolger of Carlow, Mick Rock of Roscommon, Jerry O'Sullivan of Cork, Burns and McCarthy.
In the first count the votes were Bolger 55, Burns 80, McCarthy 63, O Sullivan 38, Rock 40. The quota was 139.
After O'Sullivan was eliminated the second count was Bolger 55, Burns 92, McCarthy 88, Rock 41.
After Rock's elimination it was Bolger 56, Burns 110, McCarthy 110
Then in the 4th count when Bolger was excluded it ended McCarthy 142 Burns 132.
Larry McCarthy is a Cork native and is a former Secretary and Chairman of the New York GAA Board.
He works as a lecturer at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
He says he will live in Ireland for the term of his Presidency (2021 to 2024)
